I have been farming organically in New Jersey for the past 6 summers. I have noticed that so many neighbors around me, those who also garden but in the conventional non-organic way, complain their crops are not doing well during the hot and dry months while mine continue to florish just fine. It definately says something for organic farming to me.

Hi Julie,

So good to hear from you and glad you're enjoying the blog.

I'm going to take a guess that Mr. Holmes has his steers processed off-farm if for no other reason than the large volume he handles.

As for federal regulations, there are lots of them, and some of them are real challenges for the smaller rancher. For example, to sell meats across state lines, the animal must be dispatched and butchered at a federally-licensed plant. That can increase the final cost of the cut if the processor is hundreds of miles away. Fortunately for Dave and me, we have a terrific USDA-licensed plant within 30 miles. This not only helps with costs, but really benefits the cattle because they're saved the stress of long travel.

As for the raw milk issue. That's really heated up in Minnesota and Wisconsin. There are one or two active law suits in the news right now.

I hope we'll be chatting back and forth. Have a good week.

Your sister-in-law

Sylvia

Hello Sylvia,
I love your blog site and I have enjoyed listening to the pod casts of your radio show.

I just listened to the interview you did with Cody Holmes and took a look at his web site as well.

I'm wondering if Mr. Holmes does his own butchering on his ranch or who and how he goes about the butchering and the packaging of his meat.

I'd also be very interested in hearing about any problems people have been having with the USDA, when marketing their product, such as raw milk, etc. and how they go about obtaining their licensing, etc.

Keep up the good work!

Your sister-in-law,
Julie
